I have started an exciting new job at Disney's "Image Movers Digital" (IMD). The company is headed by Doug Chiang (one of the most talented concept artists of all times) and Writer/Director Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future, Forest Gump, etc.). Needless to say my first couple weeks have been a blast. I would have posted sooner but its been a very busy schedule for me. Everyone I work with is extremely talented and very driven so its fun going to work everyday to uncover new challenges. Well, thats all I got for now. I will try and post more often. I plan on updating this site here soon so stay tuned.

Generation Kill, iPhone, and Siggraph '08...

Well, well, well. Yet another long-overdue-post by me. First off, my wife and I have been getting our military fix by watching the new show "Generation Kill". Great show, might be a bit too coarse for some but if your watching HBO already then you shouldn't be complaining. Its not censored (meaning that its actually a true story from an embedded reporter with a recon team during the start of the recent war in Iraq). This show is one of the best shows I have ever seen. I love the military humor. On a more liberal side, my wife and I both just got iPhones. DISCLAIMER: "I am NOT a mac fanboy...I do not own a mac and I usually hide my POSITIVE opinions of apple products whenever possible in fear that a mac user might actually find out". That said, the iPhone is single handedly the most impressive piece of technology I have ever owned. As sad and pathetic as this may sound, it has changed my life. Last but not least, Siggraph was last week in L.A. We had a blast. We stayed with a buddy in a house on Manhattan beach. Amazing. Well, thats all I got for now. Take care and please for god sake dont tell any mac users that I bought an iPhone.

Fire, Fire, Fire!

Dude. Fireworks, fire arms, and fire water (alcohol). All I have to say is this is going to be the best 4th of July EVER! If not the most interesting. We are heading to Oregon to visit some of the fam for the holiday and I love spending that time corrupting the younger ones with good ol' American shenanigans. Four more years! Kidding. But seriously, you might ask yourself "whats worse than getting your nephews a bag of fireworks and a gun....the answer is a bag of fireworks and 2 guns!" Holy crap my wife and I are the worst aunt/uncle of all time. Before you go and get you undies in a bunch the fireworks are safe...they are the "pull the string and pop" crap that you hated when you were an older kid but I think they are young enough to appreciate it. The guns are an air soft gun (shoots little rubber yellow bb's...very cool) and the other is a standard plastic suction cup gun from Chinatown (wont last long, almost as much fun but 1/6 the price). Its gonna be good times lemme tell ya. Speaking of Aunts and Uncles, mine just visited about a month ago from Michigan which was a blast. Hmmm...what else has happened...oh yeah I was one of the winners for the CGtalk hardcore modeling challenge (movie robots). I did a sentinel from the matrix. Other than that LucasFilm is going great (movie comes out soon so theres lots of hype). Ummm, yeah...I am going to go play with my new airsfot gun (yes I bought one for myself too...SHUT IT!). By the way, I got the idea to buy guns from the owner of the Orphanage (Stu Maschewitzzzzz137*$& ...not sure how to spell yer last name Stu but if your reading I thank you for the airsoft tip in your movie book and the wife hates you...kidding...sadly she likes it to). Ok, seriously, I have to go shoot things. Later!

Umm..long time no post...

Hey everyone! So I have been back from Singapore for a very long time now but I never posted because I am a slacker. The trip was amazing. Anna and I had a blast and when I returned she had a party/late-thanksgiving with all of my friends. It was great. Other than that I am just plugging away at good ol' LucasFilm. A good friend of mine, Punn, is now in Singapore for the Jedi Masters program as well. He's rockin' it. Roger is tearin' it up at IMD with Anna and Shan is crying in the bathroom at lunch...kidding! Hes kickin butt too. Last but not least, Adam recently joined the Weta team in New Zealand. So him and Shan can both cry in the bathroom together. HA! Ok, Im out. More interesting stuff still to come.

Jedi Masters Program!

Ahhhh! Too much news! First off, I am in Singapore! Thats right! I am currently visiting this beautiful CLEAN country as a proud member of the Jedi Master Program....

http://www.lasjedi.com/

I am currently serving as a LucasFilm Animation instructor for another week and a half and then back to the US for some much more needed Star Wars action before the holidays. While I will miss both Christmas parties (for the US company as well as the Singapore branch) and my birthday (wipes tear from eye) I dont regret one minute of this wonderful experience. Its like the AirForce all over again. As it stands I am posting this message from a laptop in my very quiet hotel room. My wife Anna was here with me in the beginning, however, she has returned to the states to start her new job at IM Digital! Yes. you read it right...she is working with the Doug Chiang (umm...star wars..) and Robert Zemeckis' (Back to the Future). It is a very exciting time for us, especialy since a very close friend of ours (Roger) works there as well. Speaking of close friends, Shannon will be taking vacation from Weta in New Zealand to visit us next week in San Fran. In fact as soon as I get off the plane we are all scheduled to party together (I cant wait to kick his ass in 1080P with the xbox 360 on my new plasma). Anyways, its going to be very exciting, that is if I can hold up from the jet lag (Singapore is 16 hours ahead of the states....right now it is 5:41 am Thursday morning in the US and it is 9:41 PM Thursday evening in Singapore). Yes I am actually in the future. Ok I am a dork. Last but not least I finally got a chance to see some work that a very good friend of mine (Adam) did for DreamWorks on Bee Movie. It was amazing! Great job buddy! Also, another close friend of ours (Grant) had has a TON of work featured in the recently released Area 51 game....yet another game to buy to kick my friends tail in. If you guys are reading this you can get me xbox 360 controlers for christmass so I can crush you when you come over. Man I am laying t on thick. Anyways, I miss home and cant wait to see my wife, friends, and family over the holiday season. Take care and wish me luck when playing Shan on xbox.

Staff at Lucas!

Well its official. I have recently transitioned into a full time staff position at Lucasfilm Animation. Needless to say I am very happy. Sadly I wont be able to tear it up on Ironman with some of my bro's at the Orphanage but I am sure our paths will cross again in the future. Speaking of the Orphanage, Anna starts there September 4th on "Red Cliff" which is very cool. You can find a plethera of information online about the epic tail and the Orphange's ties with the movie itself. As for Lucasfilm, its been absolutely spectacular! Words cannot even begin to describe what its like to work for this company. Amazing. Simply amazing. I am really learning alot from all of the talent there. Its also nice to get the opportunity to work with some of the dudes I have looked up to in this industry and that inspire me to raise the bar. All in all my wife and I are both pretty excited for the upcoming year. Well, thats all I got for now. Take care and if any of you are attending Siggraph this week please feel free to share your photos in the forum since I am too busy to make it myself.

New Job at LucasFilm Animation!

The title of this post says it all. I am VERY happy to announce that I will be joining an extremely talented team of people at LucasFilm Animation. I start in two weeks at the legendary Lucas Ranch (which is probably one of the most beautiful places to visit let alone work). As you can see from the current project listing on the company website, I will be working on the StarWars Clone Wars Series. For more information on the company visit www.lucasfilm.com. For information on the project itself (and for a sneak peek) visit www.StarWars.com. In other news, for all of you modelers out there, I should have a new version of the LFdrawpolyTool done very soon! Thats right! Version 1.5 is on the horizon! In addition, I have a couple of other tools slated for release as well, however, now that I have all of your hopes up, I really need to spend some time on a model that I have been wanting to do for some time now before the new job kicks in...so... unfortunately the tools must go on the back burner... atleast for the next couple weeks. Well, that about sums it up for now, must get some sleep. As always, thanks for stopping by and be sure to check in for updates throughout the week.

LFdrawpolyTool video, CG section update, Toms book!

Hey everyone. Well, the LFdrawpolyTool is really doing well throughout the community, so, I thought I would put some icing on the ol' cake by generating a quick demo video showing how I use the tool as well as why I made it. Hopefully some of you will find it useful. I plan to put the video in the resources section eventually but for now heres the link...

LFdrawpolyTool Demo Video

In other news, I am in the process of updating the ol' site here and there...nothing big just updates to the Resources section as well as the CG section so be sure to keep checking in for updates (and of course pardon my dust while I am working on the links...may be kinda screwy in those sections for the next couple days). Last but not least, Toms book just arrived about 3 hours ago and man is it nice. The WORM, the trolley, the rig diagrams, and everything else turned out great. Shan's got quite a bit of stuff in there and so does Roger...all in all I am stoked for everyone including the man himself, Tom. Congrats man, great book! Well, thats all I got. Take care and as always thanks for stopping in!

Anna's new job, 2 new scripts, and more!

Well, it hasn't been very long since my last update, however, I have some exciting new stuff to share! First off, Anna starts her new job at tweak films next week! Her and I are of course very excited. She is finishing up a couple of commercials this week and then off to the movies!! She rocks! In other news, as promised I posted 2 new modeling tools (mel scripts) I developed for the San Francisco project. The first one, LFcutpolyTool, does just what it might sound like...it cuts polys. Basically you select the edgeloop/s or faces that you want to cut from the mesh and run the script. Sure beats duplicating the mesh and deleting those faces you don't want (yes Adam I used to do that too and so did everybody else...until now!). Last but not least, the most significant script, LFdrawpolyTool. Much like the other script (and all of my scripts for that matter) it too does exactly what its title explains...it draws polys, but this is no ordinary poly script. LFdrawpolyTool draws in all quads AND it has a "resurfacing" feature which allows a user to draw an all-quad-mesh accross the surface of another on-the-fly! As some of you may know, this is a very common task within the visual effects industry for generating computer based models from scan data of existing props, actors, bigatures, etc. Other scripts and programs that do the same thing are EXTREMELY expensive, so, yes, this is a very big tool to just be offering for free, but hey, what can I say....I love this stuff! Both tools can currently be found in their respective support/release thread within the forum by clicking on their names within this post. Well, thats all I got for now. Keep checking in and as always, thanks for stopping by.

Packard, New Job, School...

Well, the Packard is about is far as I am going to take it for now due to a very busy schedule....1 car down and at least 4 more to go for the "San Francisco 1937" project. Heres the link to some renders in the forum...

1934 Packard Twelve Convertible For 1937 San Francisco Project

In other news, my last day at the Orphanage was the Friday before last, however, my next contract kicks in with them in 3 months so in the mean time I have been knocking out school (finals are this week) in addition to working on a couple of commercials. I must say its very strange being home and working as opposed to at the studio after all of the crunching on Fantastic Four 2:Rise of the Silver Surfer. I am really looking forward to going back and working with everyone after the break. Last but not least Anna has been tearing it up on a few commercials herself and Roger's F-16 made it into the spring show last night which was great. Well, that about sums it up for now. As the title of this post suggest I am modeling a small section of San Francisco in 1937. People, cars, and even pigeons! All of the characters in the scene will consist of family, friends, and fellow artists. As of right now I have myself in 1937 attire (no hair yet), a 1934 Packard automobile, and of course the trolley. For more info visit the project thread in the forum (http://www.landisfields.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=612#612) . In other news, my wife Anna, Carrie, Roger, and myself attended an exclusive Orphanage screening of "The last Mimzy". It was great to see my shot on the big screen in all of its glory. Last but not least my lovely wife Anna just got her first job in the industry as a Production Coordinator and needless to say we are very grateful. Ok, I have kept you all away from your busy lives long enough. Its been a while since my last post. Everything has been going great at work, I am really lucky to be getting my hands on multiple things which is awesome. I recently got a chance to check out the wondercon comic book convention here in san fran and man was it cool. I picked up a small statue of the human torch for my desk...not the one I worked on but the old school one. Its pretty cool. Speaking of cool I uploaded another script in the forum
( http://www.landisfields.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=158 ). Its an image plane toggle script which is fairly common in the vfx industry, however, I wrote this one because all the ones that I have used in the past would clear my current selection/tool, so, LFtoggleImagePlane allows you to toggle all image planes on the fly while preserving your current component selection/s. Pretty simple but nice. Intended for use while modeling or working with files from matchmove that have image sequences that need to be refered to but do not need to be on at all times. Anyways, enjoy. More to come soon so keep checkin' in.

Roger's Party + Introduction Thread

Well, I am recovering from Roger's surprise birthday party last night so I will keep this short. Good times. We went up to mount diablo before the party to gather some more light probe data (HDRI photos). Very windy and cold but alot of fun. Last but not least, lately alot of people have requested a place to introduce themselves in the forum, well, its actually been there for quite a while but heres the link ( http://www.landisfields.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=43 ). If you have been to the theatre lately you probably already know about this by now but basically the Fantastic Four 2 trailer and the Spiderman 3 trailer is now screening in theatres. For Fantastic Four 2 I was a Fire Technical Director on the Human Torch (I did the fire simulation for the shot just before the human torch flies between the 2 semi's and the shot where he flies out from between them). I also worked on the rig for one of the semi trucks as well. For Spiderman 3 I had the oppertunity to work with some very talented people on a couple of environments within the film (the most obvious one in the trailer is the background in the part where Spiderman is holding the Sandmans head up to the train). There is quite a bit more that will be in the film so make sure you go and see it when it comes out. Its going to be pretty cool. Also, Mimzy is now called The Last Mimzy and that trailer is out as well (see my last post for details). If you havent made it out to theatres in a while you can watch all of these trailers and more on Apple's website....even in HD! Last but certainly not least, I now have a new job. As of yesterday I am officially working at the Orphanage. They worked on Pirates of the Carribean, Sin City, Hell Boy, The Day After Tommorow, and many others. The Orphanage has a strong reputation in the industry for being extremely hard working professinals that love making movies as much as people love watching them so I am obviously very honored to join the team. Well, that about sums it up for now. As always thanks for stopping by and be sure to swing by the forum section to see some of the recent work from myself, my friends, students, and professionals. Its free and its fun. Spread the word!

GKR, WORM, Birthday.

Well, my time with GKR is officially up. I love GKR and the fact that they let you specialize in multiple phases of the production. I will never forget the wonderful and talented people that I had the oppertunity to work with especially Adam. Speaking of which if you go to the MIMZY website you can see a shot that Adam and I worked on together. Its the one with the childs hands out in front of the camera while a bridge is being built. I did the planet earth/stars in the background (will be MUCH more aparent in the full shot of the film) and he did the galaxy in the sky as well as look developement for the bridge assembly. Lately I have been scrambling to catch up on all of my school work and...well...just life in general. Thanks to Brad's post in the forum I remembered to share some cool news with all of you....I recently found out that the WORM is being broadcasted through a partnership between the Academy of Art and Comcast for the month of December. Just go to Channel 888/ Entertainment /Animated Shorts. Pretty cool! In other news Tom's Book will be out shortly so start saving now so you can pick up a copy. Its called the Maya 8 Complete Reference. You can find it on Amazon already. The WORM is on the cover and will also be featured inside the book along with the Trolley. Last but not least I would like to thank all my buds for stopping out on my birthday. My wife sent out an evite to all the people she had emails for. We met in Golden Gate Park to take HDRI's with the new mirrored ball she got me for my birthday....I know...I know...I am a total geek. Anyways, I had a blast so thank you all for stopping by and thanks to my wife for organizing the whole event as well as for being the most wondferful/supportive person on the planet. Ok, thats all I got. Back to my finals.

Happy Feet!

First off, everyones pumpkins turned out great! Between school and work I have been pretty busy so I was forced to turn mine in a few days late...ouch! In other news my first film comes out in 6 days! Thats right! Happy Feet! I am very excited. Its not actually my first film contribution...technically the first film I worked on isnt due out till next summer but this is the first one out of the gate. My company (Giant Killer Robots) was invited to an exclusive advanced screening last thursday night which was awesome! My wife and I really enjoyed both the party/s and the movie. Unofrtunately I joined the Happy Feet team towards the end of the production so I didnt make the credits (wipes tear from eye) but two of my other buddies did (Adam and Shannon). Congrats guys! Adam has been on credits before but this is a first for Shan (other than the worm...hehe)! Way to go buddy! Lastly, Roger has been tearing up the Mr.Tuttles thread in the forum so be sure to check it out when you get the chance! Well, thats all I got for now, back to homework.

Click or Treat!

I love halloween and I love 3D, so, I am pleased to announce the first annual...

Where? Click Here (in the forum)
When? From now till halloween.
Why? Because we are all still kids at heart.
How? Either from scratch or using the template (base mesh) I provided.
Prize? Hmmmm...um...nothing. Its that time once again boys and girls. Back to school. I am hoping to be able to get into a couple of workshops this semester as well...mainly Adrians mel workshop. I really need to finish up this little bundle of joy (script) I have been wrenching on at night....its VERY cool...cant wait to unleash it on all of you. So what classes you guys got? A buddy of mine from GKR (he now works at ILM) is signed up for a 4 year masterclass program...classical training...sounds very exciting. He is one of the guys from the conceptart.org team. Great dude. In other news since my last post I have done modeling, matte painting, and am now doing FX Animation at GKR! Man working with FX animation makes you feel pretty powerful. I cant tell all of you how much fun I am having. For those of you who dont know it is a very rare thing to be allowed to work on multiple phases of the production...which is why I really wanted to work at GKR. I am really having a blast working there. I have learned SOOOOO much. That reminds me, Adam Ely let me in on a great site for those of you out there that truly love movies as an art form (not just for the special effects but for the storytelling aspects, composition, etc.) ...the site is http://www.hollywoodsaloon.com/. Last but not least Roger has been tearing up the turtle in zbrush so he should probably be posting something in the forum some time soon. Also, you may already know by now but Shannon finished his Chesney Baker mudbox sculpture . It really did turn out great...in fact I like the results/interface from Mudbox so much that I plan to use it on the AIRMAN. This semester I am going to cook up a comparison tutorial between mudbox and zbrush.

Man 'O' Man!

Ok. Siggraph is obviously over. I planned to post at the end of every day, however, almost ever single night we all went out for drinks and needless to say I wasnt in any condition to be typing on my blog when I got back to the hotel. LOL. Anyways, my wife, Carrie, Tom, Roger, and myself had a blast nearly every single night. Kristoff, Josh, and Jacob joined us a couple of nights for some slammin' fun and we even got the chance to have some drinks with a couple of rockstars from SCAD (Savannah's art school). Overall great time. The masterclasses were stellar. My brain was on fire after the I.L.M. bi-directional constraint lecture....ouch. Good times...brilliant stuff there...Tom and I were basically speechless after that one. The blender booth was large and in charge and the Autodesk party was amazing. Last but not least the Shanster surpirsed us by flying in to work the Rythm booth...that little bastard. It was monkeys huggin' like crazy. On a lighter note, as f thursday I am officially out of the millitary and am fulltime at GKR on the same day! Pretty cool eh'? Nuthin' like landing a job at what you love to seal the deal with the whole 'official' transition into the civillian life. Well, that about sums up all the festivities. Oh yeah, Anna and I are checkin' out places in the city and we have our hearts set on this one place REALLY close to both of our works so keep your fingers crossed! Finally, keep pokin' your head in for some MAJOR goodies/updates soon. See you in the forum!

Siggraph Day 1

Oh yeah! Day 1. What can I say...Amazing. Last night we got in to Boston, tracked down Tom, Kristoff and Josh and headed over to the pub for some stella's. Good times. This morning we all crawled out of bed (I was feeling a little rough) and headed over to register for the event (we are actually staying right across the street from siggraph). The exhibit floor was ofcourse still under construction for tommorow's opening but we could see it through the glass and focourse it all looks amazing. Next we headed over to the Autodesk user group event and man was that shweeeeeeeet! Maya 8 was announced (it can be downloaded as of right now via download as a platinum user). They also awarded 3 new maya masters awards and added the award category to the max community as well. Last but not least they showed off some of the new Maya 8 features before kicking off the party (free unlimited food and alcohol for everyone that attended). Ok, I have more to talk about but I have to get to bed...Jason Scleifer's class at 0800 hours.

Siggraph is just around the corner!

The lemmings are coming! The lemmings are coming! No seriously, if you are serious (thats 2 "serious's" already) about 3D than you probably already have tickets. If your REALLY serious (3) about 3D then you probably are too busy making movies to go. LOL. Nevertheless its here. My wife and I are going with Roger and his girlfriend Carrie and man are we stoked! I was lucky enough to get a seat for Jason Schliefers come back special (Autodesk Rigging Masterclass). Better yet I will be sitting next to Tom Meade (friend/mentor). While it is kinda' hard on the wallet due to it being held in Boston this year, I am still excited nonetheless...ESPECIALLY since I have had a taste of the sweet nector at GKR (Giant Killer Robots). Ok, I am in my mel class and my teacher just walked in so I have to go. Seriously (4). So what does it do you ask? Well, the LFmessenger mel script allows user's to send messages from inside of Maya to anyone within the studio/lab on a standard windows network. The cool thing is that the recipient does not need to have Maya running or installed to recieve messages sent from LFmessenger. I have already been testing it at work with a couple of buddies of mine and let me tell ya'...it works great! I am pretty excited. The script itself is now offered on Highend3D and ofcourse lives in the resources section here on my site, however, I have also created an LFmessenger thread within the new "Scripting" category inside of the forum! First off the internship is going great. Kristen has been showing me all the tricks. Last week my wife and I flew back home to Michigan for my sisters High school graduation and man did I have some fun with my family. It was hard not to be able to spend that much time with them but it was definately better than not going at all. I also got to see my uncle Tim's work (Dan Henry Distributing) which was very cool. My Dad and my uncle Randy were a hoot as usual. My dads business just got voted number one business in Lansing...congrats dad! My uncle Den came over after my sisters open house and hung out with us which was really nice and my uncle Tim even suprised us at the airport to see us off! Its sad that there isnt any studios around my family but it is something that I am learning to deal with. The nice thing is that returning home to San Fransisco truly felt good. My wife and I grow closer and closer all the time. I think we are both kinda going through the same thing. On a lighter note this week has been going very well at work...I am getting to know people more which is nice...getting past that weird uncomfortable stage where a collegue and I will stand there looking at eachother without anything to say since we dont know anything about one another. LOL. Too funny. The stories about how people got into the industry have been just fascinating to me. There are some remarkable people that have all pretty much just landed in the same spot. I guess thats life in general. Adam told me his mother would say something about the river taking you but still being able to paddle around obstacles...man did I just masacre that quote but basically it was a good one. Well, thats all I got for now. Time once again to get some sleep. I told Clint at work today that he better get ready because I am going to be buggin' him next week when school starts with mel scripting questions. I forsee me buying alot of lunches. No seriously he's cool and use to teach 3D so I think he's secretly looking forward to it.

Internship...

I am very tired and must get some sleep but I just wanted to let everyone know that I really appreciate all the emails and comments. The internship is absolutley amazing. Working at Giant Killer Robots is everything I could have imagined and then some. Everyone is very nice and extremely helpful. I cannot tell you how much I have learned in the last 2 days. The 2 people I work with (Kristen and Clint) are awesome. The day goes so fast. Ok, enough tired jibberish out of me...must get some sleep. I promise I will post something a little more entertaining tommorow.
